Fades Crossfades and Envelopes V1 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's talkabout Fades crossfades and envelopes inCubase but before we start I want toremind you that there's a link below tothe content navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there if you're working withprograms like wavelab or Cubase pluginsor the cable guys shaper box and manymany other projects that are in theworks then I know you're going to findjust like I have that this is aninvaluable study Aid and the other thingI want to make sure you understand isthat this is not a simple PDF this is aconstantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you okay solet's get started if you've been usingCubase a while you understand what theFades and the cross Fades are all aboutbut as usual there's more informationbelow the surface so let's dig into thisyour basic concept with Fades on anyevent when you select it immediatelylittle triangles appear on the left andright that allow you to fade in or FadeOut what's nice is that if you selectmore than one event you can move thefade in on all of those or the fade outsall at the same time these fade in andfade outs are referred to as handles andthey only appear when you hover over theevents with your mouse if for somereason you want to keep those therevisibly all the time you can go to editto your preferences and down the list towhere it says event display and audioyou have an option that says show eventvolume curves always if I check that hitapply okay the fade in and fade outswill always be visible besides to fadein and Fade Out you have a volume handleyou can drag up or down everything youmove like this is reflected as well upon the info line right now on the infoline it's saying negative four as I movethis down it changes to negative thirdteen if you want to reset these back tozero again one tip I can offer you ifyou go up to your info line and holdCtrl click it with your mouse andthat'll reset it another preference youhave is you can use your mouse wheel toadjust these if we go back up to edit toour preferences and this time in the topcategory of editing and then audiothere's one you can check here that saysuse the mouse wheel for event volume andFades hit apply okay if I hold my mouseover the volume that'll now spin thatwhen I use the mouse wheel in order tocontrol the Fades hold the shift keywhen you spin your mouse hovering overeither one and you can do that with yourmouse wheel as well you have someinteresting options that you can use therange tool create your Fades if I createa range here and I go up to audio weactually have a selection dedicated toFades you have one for the fade in orthe Fade Out to the range for example ifI go Fade Into range then I get a fadein like this if I repeat the steps andgo Fade Out from the range end then Iget this option if you know you needfade in Fade Out on both sides you cango to the third option says adjust theFades to the range and you get bothwhat's nice about this is you can do itacross multiple clips if I select allthese clips and I drag a range and I goto audio I come down and say Fades torange then I get phase on every one ofthese clips leading in and out of therangewhen it comes to these Fades anytime youuse a fade you get the default fade ifyou go up to audio down to your Fadesyou have a fade editorand of course you can change any ofthese Fades as you're looking at thembut if you want to change one of theseinto the default you have the option tosay as default and now anytime you usethat fade that's what you're going toget you can manually change any fade butif you have many fadesyou can also just select your events goback to your fade menu and you have theoption to remove fade in Fade Out orremove all the Fades if we go back toour audio Fades and open the fade editoras we examine our dialog we see we cansave presets if we need to when you lookat the curve besides all these presetshapes you can grab the nodes on thereand make your own shape and click to addextra nodes you have these splinebuttons up here that will add slightvariation in the curve anytime you hitrestore you're going to go back to thestraight curve you have an option toactually set the length down here if youwant to and then as we said if you finda curve you want you can set it as thedefault another option you have is a setof range either on One Clip or multipleclips open up your direct offlineprocessing and go to processes you cango to fade in Fade Out in this case it'sa fade in so I'll hit that and that willimmediately apply a fade in okay I wantto take kind of a left turn here andshow you something about audio sharedparts or shared Clips or whatever youwant to call it there's an option whenyou take a clip like this you can grabthis little handle in the middle drag itout and you get copies of that clip noweach one of these are still independentbecause if I put a fade here it doesn'taffect these other Clips I could selectthem all and then do that and it wouldaffect all those clips if these clipsare all over the project you don't havethe luxury of just clicking and draggingover them like that there's another wayto approach it take your audio event andcome down to audio events to part thiscreates an audio part done videos on theaudio part editor you may want to watchthose but what's different about anaudio part if I grab this handle now andI hold shift this creates shared copiesand what shared copies are anytime youdo something to one of these it's goingto affect all of these if I go back upto my process like we did and let's sayI want to put a fade in I'm going to geta dialogue showing that I'm working withshared copies you can continue on or Ican create a new version I'm going tocontinue on because I do want to affectall my copies and as you can see I nowhave Fades on every one of these copythese and these could be all over theproject some other things I want topoint out about shared Clips becausethere's just not enough informationabout it you'll notice when I pick oneof these clips there's no longer ahandle up here to grab to make a fadewhich seems a little cumbersome becausewhen it was an event I could easily makechanges to it that's no big deal becauseif I grab one of these events and openit up in the audio part editor I nowhave freedom again to grab handles andchange the Fades right on the eventitself again and if I open this up inthe lower Zone then I can actually seethe results on every clip at the sametime and I can actually change thedifferent clips and see the result inthe lower zone of the audio part editorand again I can change these Fades andit affects every single part when you'redealing with audio parts be aware thatat any time you can select one of themor all of them back to your audio menuand say dissolve this part and at thatpoint they all become audio events againall right that's going to wrap it up fortoday as always if you haven't alreadybe sure to grab your copy of the digitalaudio manual content navigation guidefaster better way to learn and reviewpick it up look it over all thedifferent topics that are gathered therethen you can get started on your paththrough a better way to learn all thisstuff we began the discussion of phaseand cross Fades and envelopes and Cubasewe have some more to discuss on thistopic we're going to pick that up nexttime today we look at the handles we sawhow to fade the ranges the default Fadeswe saw how to remove the fade in out andall the Fades fade dialog box got into alittle bit of the offline process optionand then talked about the shared copiesas we continue to move through all theseTopics in Cubase as always it's great tohave you guys here and I'll see you onthe next video
