today we talk about

Extensions in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today let'stalk about extensions in qbase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate web page with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere if you're working with programslike wave laab or qbas plugins or thecable guide shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos or changedreally anything updated and once youhave it you will always have the latestinformation constantly updated so if youhaven't gotten it already go to the linkbelow click on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you okay solet's get started extensions in qbase isbasically the option to have anotherthird- party plug-in take over and beused in qbase easiest example isspectral layers which is included withqbase a simple free version if I take apiece of audio and I click on it and itgo up to my audio menu and I come downto the option that says extensions I cansee on this menu that spectral layers isavailable and If I click on it it thenopens up the program of spectral layersfor me to begin potentially doingspectral editing on my audio which youwant to consider is when you're firstgetting some kind of other plugin doesit have the ability to become anextension if we go back up to studio andwe come down to more options and we lookover at this submenu there's an optiondown here that says the system componentinformation we open up this screen wehave all kinds of tabs but one tab atthe end stands for extensions if I clickon that I can now see the spectr layersis installed on my system it tells thename of the program what version it isthe important thing to notice is overhere on type it says AR which is theaudio Random Access it's just the nameof the plugin itself so when you'relooking for things that may beextensions you want to consider lookingto see if they have an AR pluginextension on them for example if we do asimple search for isotope AR for exampleI can see right here there's a couple ofoptions that come up once says musicrebalance and as I look towards thebottom of the description it says it canbe used as an ar2 plugin so potentiallythis product could also be used inCubase as an extension and there may beall kinds of other products eitherpresently or in the future that you'reinterested in that you may want to usein the form of an extension in qbase butyou want to make sure and look that theyhave this ar2 plugin extension offeredwith the plugin that you buy nowassuming that they do have that youbasically just install it on your systemand register it and you'll automaticallycome to this list again in your studioTab and more options and the systemcomponent information whatever youinstall you'll see it listed here unlessyou do see it listed here it won't befunctional in Cubase so that's the firstpart of your journey is one either checkout what's already on your system or toinstall something that you want on yoursystem but make sure it shows up here asan AR extension once you have thosethings in place then you can go on tothe next level of actually clicking on apiece of audio going up to your audiomenu and coming down to your extensionsand then opening up whatever extensionthat you have to do further editing onyour audio now we did a whole system ofvideos on this particular plugin thespectral layers which is in thenavigation guide feel free to explorethat if you're interested we're notgoing to go into deep detail of how tooperate this particular plug-in but thiswas serve as our example of how thewhole system operates so there's acouple ways to activate your extensionson your audio events click on your audioevent go up to the audio menu come downto extensions whatever extensions areregistered on your system you'll havethere another option is to hold controlright click on your audio event you havethe same menu that says extensions andthen you also have up on the info linean option for extensions if you don'tsee it you need to right click come downto where it says extensions then you'llhave a visible option you can click onthat and the same thing you'll have alist of whatever extensions areregistered I'm going to go ahead and hitthis one that says spectral layers whichwe've already seen opens up the spectrallayers program once you've registeredthat to your event you're going to see alittle icon appear in the upper rightmeaning that you now have an extensionconnected to this audio event and whatyou're going to see now instead of yourregular editing to an audio event likein this case the sample editor anytime Iclick on this event that has thisextension on it it's going to open upthe program that's associated with ityou get some interesting behaviors onyour editor if I go back and I select myevent with the extension on it and thenI open up the lower Zone that'llactually open up the spectral layerseditor opened I can also go up to thisoption in the upper right say add anevent click on this I can then go andadd another audio event by clicking onit and I can continue to add eventsuntil I come down and click the addevent light and turn it off to removethese extensions you can either selectone event or I can click and drag overboth of these events go up to audio comedown to my extensions and then they havethe option to remove the extension fromthe selected events you have the optionon any of these events that have theseextensions go up to audio Ander theextensions and then make the extensionpermanent once you do that that can't beundone so I'm not really sure thebenefit of doing that because itoperates the same whether it's temporaryor not but you can make them permanentif you want you also have the option toactivate your extensions on a per tracklevel so instead of selecting each oneof these individually if I go over tothe track go over to the inspectorthere's an drop down where I can selectan extensionI'll hit spectr layers on this one andthen every event gets the little icon inthe right and the track itself gets alittle icon showing that the extensionis activated and if I click on anyparticular event that shows up down herein the lower Zone and I can edit it as Ichange the events it's updated in thelower Zone and then if I want to returnit back to normal I go back to the drop-down list come down and say no extensionand now they're just regular audioevents again so earlier I said I wasn'tsure what the advantage of making theseprocesses permanent are but now it'scome to the light if you want tocontinue to do other processes forexample maybe you want to use very audioon this track or event or part or otherkinds of editing can't do that as longas the extension is applied because youcan't open these parts back up in thesample editor and the minute youdeactivate the extension whatever editsyou've made go away until you reactivatethe extension again so for example ifyou were using some spectral layersediting on these parts and you completedyour editing and you removed or added orupdated the part however you want onedbut then you wanted to use very audio onit or do some kind of other sampleediting then you would definitely wantto make these extensions permanent soyou could turn your extensions off andthen continue editing normally like youwould for any kind of audio part andthat's going to wrap it up for ourdiscussion of the ar audio extensionsand cubas as always if you haven'talready be sure to grab your copy of thedigital audio manual content navigationguide from the link below the fasterbetter way to learn and review pick itup look it over all the different topicsthat are gathered there and then you cancan get started down your path to abetter way to learn all this stuff sotoday we talked about extensions andcuas we talked about the activatingextension options we saw they could beeither per track or per part we saw theeffect on the lower Zone editing andthen we saw how we want to make thempermanent if we're going to do any kindof further audio editing as we continueto move through all these differenttopics and subjects in qbase as alwaysit's great to have you guys here andI'll see you on the next
