Dynamic EQ Master Rig in Wavelab Pro

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's talkabout the dynamic EQ from the master rigand wavelab pro but before we start Iwant to remind you that there's a linkbelow to the free content navigationguide which is an easy to navigatewebpage with links to all the content onthis channel and besides that in thenear future I'm going to begin addingtips and other bits of information thatwill only be available there you knowthings like simple steps that will getyou started and up and running quickthings that are in the videos but arewritten down in simple steps that serveas quick reminders when you needinformation down the road if you'reworking with programs like wave lab orCubase plugins or the cable guys shaperbox and many many other projects thatare in the works then I know you'regoing to find just like I have that thisis an invaluable study Aid and the otherthing I want to make sure you understandis that this is not a simple PDF this isa constantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so Dynamic EQ there is a termthat probably sends fear among manypeople it sounds terribly complicated isit an EQ Dynamic what is what is thatlet's see if we can remove some of thatand show you just how basically simplethis whole thing really is we have themaster rig in front of us let's put adynamic EQ in here and we have two ofthem we have a dynamic eqa a dynamic eqbthey're both the same you can pickeither one it's just you have the optionto use two of them if you want let's goahead and put it in there and at firstglance it's kind of like an EQ it hasbands that we can move up or down but ithas a whole bunch of extra knobs downhere and a dynamic slider and what doesall of this do let me pull this out ofthe way for a minute let's just use thisexample with a kick and a snareand if we look at our EQ it's prettyobvious where the kick is happening andwhere the clap or the snare is happeninghere both areas are fairly defined thisis just an example to help isolate theconcept of what's going on here so let'ssay for our example we want to dosomething to this snare and the wholeidea behind a dynamic EQ is when you goto a band and you start changing thefrequencylike you would normally do with an EQabsolutely nothing is happening exceptfor we have something different visuallyhere but if you listen to the soundthere is no change if I go up to the EQand I bypass itthere's no changeif you look up here something'shappening visuallyand this is band two that we're workingon so if I go down to the Band 2 and Ilook at the Dynamics area and if youlook each one of these bands has alittle Dynamics area and every one ofthem are responding each one hassomething happening but let's focus onthe one that I've changed here the bandtwo notice that the actual sound ishardly getting to this little notch onthe Dynamicsand if I take this and I move it fartherto the rightthen you can see all this then it's noteven getting close to this Notch theother thing to notice is I move thisNotch this corresponds to the thresholdknob over hereso I can do either one I can move thislittle notch or I can grab the thresholdknob either one's going to do the sameexact thing but now watch what happensas soon as I start moving this down andI cross over this blue area where thesound actually isnow that band is actually dipping thatfrequency right out of there and it'sonly happening because the clap ishitting so the idea is whatever soundyou're working on you actually havealmost like a compressor the ability toset the threshold of when things aregoing to react to the right no reactiononce I cross the threshold depending onhow far Across the Threshold depends onhow much I Notch out of theretake a wild guess what will happen if Iincrease thissame thing as long as it's not crossingthe dynamic threshold it's not doinganything but watch what happens when Inow cross a thresholdI'm now accenting that frequencynow listen to what's happening on thekickno change whatsoevermaybe a slight change because of the wayI've got this cue so wide here basicallyif I bypass thisnot a huge difference on the kickbecause This only affects the frequencythat we're setting up here meaning thatit can increase it or decrease it at avery specific frequency watch whathappens if we change the Q downlet's move it back off the Dynamics heresee I can actually increase a specificfrequency by notching it same thing Ican decrease a specific frequency andNotch it outchanging the Dynamics againwatch what happens when I increase thisQ againto where it kind of spreads over thekick as wellyou can hear the kick has gotten thinneras welllet's bypass itit's affecting both the kick and theclapbring it back inso by setting this Q I'm decidingexactly how much of this frequency Iwant to take out of here at any giventimeso the big difference between theregular EQ and this Dynamic EQ thisNational frequency will be gone all thetime the minute I drag this down I wouldhave ever moved this out of the sound orincreased it either way but in this caseit's only happening when it's beingtriggered by whatever it is I'm tryingto affect now granted when there's moreinstruments playing it's not quite assimple as it is when we have oneisolated sound but the concept is thesame if you have a full mix and you havea particular sound that's eitherstanding out too much or you need alittle bit more of it but you only wantit being affected when that particularsound is happening that's where yourDynamic EQ is really going to come intoeffect because then you don't have tonotch up or Notch down everything allthe time you can try to find somethingparticular that's only going to beaffected when that problem or when youfind that thing you're trying toactually accent only when those thingsare present will this EQ come into playso with all of that let me try to giveyou some more of a kind of a real worldexample here in this song that I madeenlighten me I got a little carried awayon certain hits there's a point herewhere Kick Drum hits think I might haveput a Tiffany hit in here and I can'tremember at this point there may havebeen some other percussion the bottomline is there's an excessive low end hitthat occurs like every four beats hereand you can see right here there's avery high spike it occurs here it's overhere and on and on let me just play thisreal quickforeignright there and again I've removed allmy mastering plugins on this butdepending on what kind of compression Ihave on here and other things this Spikejust jumps right out and it jumps rightout more than anything else trying touse a compressor to bring this down yourwork the compressor works so hard to tryto bring the spike down it affects theoverall sound of everything else theideal situation would be some way toattack this one little hit short ofgoing back and remixing the whole thingof course but sometimes you don't havethat option and sometimes you just don'twant to do it so enter the dynamic EQI'm going to turn on my parameter linkfor the absolutes make sure everything'son then I can grab this Dynamics andturn the threshold all the way down andat this point this is going to actpretty much like an EQ because it'sgoing to respond to any frequency and itdoesn't matter about the Dynamics atthis point because I pretty much turnedthe Dynamics off so if I set up a looppoint to try to isolate this hit[Music]when you do something like this rememberto turn this absolute off and I knowit's down here in this low endthere it is right thereit's an excessive build up so now I'mgoing to lower the gain on that[Music]and as I look at my Dynamics I'm goingto bring this off completely[Music]and the goal is I want to try to isolateas much as I can this particular hit interms of its loudness and how much it'shitting without killing all of my otherlow end in other words if I can get myEQ to respond to just this very highpeak and kill some of this low end whenit comes up here without removing reallyany low end around it then we havereached our goal so let's see if we cando something like that as we do this ifyou look up on this area here we havesome kind of idea of where the dip is atthe exact point where it's hitting thatextra low end information I can see thisdipping just a little bit extra over therest of the low endwhich allows me to kind of fine tune itdown here I can use my mouse even tospin itand just like that I've kind of tamedthat extra low end hit because this EQis only kicking in with its excessivedip the point where it's actuallyreading the successive loud hit and youcan use Dynamic EQ for anything likethis where you need to tame something ormaybe try to bring something up that'skind of weak at a certain point but thegreat advantage over the regular EQ isyou don't have this huge dip in thefrequency all the time totally weakeningthis low end if this only comes alivewhen this threshold is crossed so thisturns out to be a very nice tool whenyou need to attack something somewhatspecific all right it's gonna wrap it upfor today as always if you haven'tgrabbed your navigation guide be sure tograb that from the link below this videogives you quick easy access to all thecontent on the channel ever growing andfree to use content is in ordercontinually updated is there to help youand it's there to help me do yourself afavor click on it download it and thenjust use it whenever you need it so thedynamic EQ the next time you hear thatterm hopefully it will not beintimidated you have some idea now ofwhere you can use it and how how to useit it's another great module in themaster rig and we will continue throughexploring all these different modulesand get ourselves comfortable so we knowhow to use this tool as always it'sgreat to have you guys here I'll see youon the next video
