hello everybody Andrew Blake from Thedigitalaudiomanual.com Today we'removing on to our third video as wecontinue to discuss the common midieditor functions in Cubase but before westart I want to remind you that there'sa link below to the free contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate webpage with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere you know things like simple stepsthat will get you started and up andrunning quick things that are in thevideos but are written down in simplesteps that serve as quick reminders whenyou need information down the road ifyou're working with programs likewavelab or Cubase plugins or the cableguys shaper box and many many otherprojects that are in the works then Iknow you're going to find just like Ihave that this is an invaluable studyAid and the other thing I want to makesure you understand is that this is nota simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the third videoas we continue to discuss these commonmidi editor functions previous videosbeing in the navigation guide below asalways but let's start off today lookingat some of the ways that we can copy andmove some midi notes around I'm going toright click and select this little Zoomtool and I'm going to drag over somenotes to zoom inso commonly with Cubase there's so manymoves where you can do this wherever youtake a note and then you use the ALT keyby holding down the ALT key you canalways drag a note and make a copy of itand that applies to so many things partsand just anything in Cubase you can holdalt and drag copies out the shortcut ifyou haven't changed it when you want tojust duplicate notes just hit Ctrl and dand you can just make long copies ofanything you have if you're going to bedoing a lot of copying or you need tomake a long list of something you knowselect it hit Ctrl K and you'll get thisrepeat events where you can then justspin it up let's say I want to make youknow 12 of these and I hit OK and thereI have it you know could be 30 of themif I didn't want to just sit there andcreate them and then this one is reallygreat and it's probably one of thoselittle hidden ones if you don't use itbut it can come in handy in so many wayswhen you go to the end of a note andagain this happens with a lot of thingsin Cubase go to the end where your mousechanges to a double arrow then hold youraltogether in and then click and dragand you can draw out whatever length youneed of that part this is useful in somany ways for example when you drawsomething out like this it makes it soeasy to then hold Ctrl which then takesoff your snap option and you can likeshrink these into different sizes andyou get this kind of effect this is justso great in so many ways always be awarethat whatever notes you draw they'regoverned by whatever snap that you havein place up on your toolbar up herethere's typically a button up here thatshows the snap on and off when you clickon that and turn it off then you canfreely drag notes around without beingon the grid if that's something you needbut when that is on whatever thequantized grid is like in this case ifyou look over here it says an eighthnote that means this note is going tosnap to every eighth note as it goesalong a quick shortcut for turning yoursnap on and office hit the letter J onyour keyboard you hit J and then you canfreely drag things around again everynote you hit has some kind of velocityattached to it meaning how hard the noteis going to hittypically if you haven't changed yourshortcuts again if you hold Ctrl andshift your little pointer turns into aspeaker and then you can drag it up anddown and it changes the velocity thatway whenever you select a note you getall kinds of information up here in theinfo bar and one of those options is thevelocity which again I could put mymouse over and I could spin it changethe velocity that wayand this applies whether it's one noteor many notes I could select many notesand change their velocityif you have it enacted up on yourtoolbar there's actually an option thatsays insert velocity and that opens up adrop down which gives you numbers youcan double click and change that way ifyou want and it also has a little dropdown which gives you some quick changesin terms of velocity numbers and at thebottom of that it has a setup screenwhen you hit that then you can changethose to whatever you want and thesenumbers these one through five numbersthese things can be assigned keycommands so if it's something you needwhere you're changing velocities a lotbe aware you can go over into your editarea down to the key commands and thenif you go up to this top screen and justtype in the word velocity hit enter youwill get just a number of differentthings in the velocity option if I keephitting plus it'll just take me throughall kinds of different options andthere's even shortcuts in the projectlogical editor here like this one lookat every other hi-hat change thevelocity just all kinds of greatcommands to Velocity but if I keep goingthrough this I eventually come to a fullthey're called midi and in that is thisinsert velocity one two three four fivewhich I can then assign key commands tothese if I want but don't restrictyourself just to this again there's somany velocity options in your keycommands you want to just explore thatsometime okay so the next thing I wantto show you it helps if you actuallycolor your tracks and if you're not surehow to do that you know select a trackgo up to the color area just pick acolor and you'll have a different coloron whatever track so I'm going to havethree different parts of the same thinghere and they all have three differentcolors so if I select them all justclick and drag with my mouse and thendouble click all three of those partsnow open up in this key editor butnotice in this case right now they'renot visible and you can start searchingaround for them and scanning for themand doing the things you would do tosearch for things but if you haven'tchanged your shortcuts and you just hitshift eit will bring that part you've selectedor group of Parts into view and fullscreen then if you go up onto thetoolbar there's an area that allows youto pick the parts and how they arecolored and you have an option to pickvelocity or pitch or any of these otherchoices up here but you have an optionthat says part so I'm going to pick theone that says part and now they reflectwhatever the track colors are so youhave that option which makes it easierto see the next thing you want to beaware of is there's another area up herethat's called the part editing mode andthis allows you to either show theborders of your partor it allows you to pick an option thatsays edit all the parts or edit theactive part now let me just show yousome of the advantages of knowing thedifference on these things if I chooseedit the active part in this list eventhough if you can see here we have threedifferent nodes little group chords ofall these different notes and what theseare are representations of these threeparts back in the projectbut the key editor allows you to seemore than one part at a time so you canselect all of these and then you can seethem all right here in the key editorbut this is a common thing in Cubaseyou're going to see that when you use avery audio or some audio selections youmight do you have the option to putmultiple Parts in view but you only wantto edit maybe one of them at a time butbesides that there's another list uphere that allows you to pick the actualpart that you're working on I labeledthese piano second piano third piano soas I go through them these borders hereon the part they change the name andit's also hard to see but the the actualpart highlights and the others grow alittle bit dimmer but for examplebecause this is set to edit the activepart if I do something like click anddrag over a group of these notes theonly ones that are going to select arethe ones from the active part the otherones Remain unselected the advantage ofthis now is for example if I go up tothe pitch up here on the info line Istart spinning the pitch all only thoseactive notes are going to get changedand the other ones are left alone samething applies to the velocity if I go tothe velocity and start spinning it onlythe velocity of those chosen notes aregetting changed if I go up here to mydrop down and I pick a different partout of here then I make anotherselection now only those notes are goingto get changed if I hit the pitchor the velocityon the other hand if I go through thisdrop down that gives you the edit partand I say edit all the parts now when Imake a selection of notes even thoughthese are in three separate parts backin the project window all of these partsare getting changed at the same time soif I again if I go back up to pitch Istart spinning it they all change now ifI close this out this editor and insteadof having parts that are all stacked oneach other let's say I got a part that'shere and then I pick another one overhere later and another one here atdifferent places in the song I can stillopen all three of these up in the editorand when I click on it it comes intoview and the same thing if I hit shiftand E if I haven't you know if youhaven't changed those shortcuts thatparticular part is what comes into viewwhatever you've chosen and you go uphere to this active part and you pick adifferent partand that's what comes into view and youpick another one and that's what comesinto view and if you zoom out of this ifI hold Ctrl and spin out of this you cansee there's a group of midi notes overhere there's a group of midi notes hereand a group of midi notes here and if Igo back up to this active part and Ichange itnotice the selection will change rightthereso instead of me having to like figureout real fine selections and all thatit's all done automatically as long as Iknow where the part is and the otherthing you can do again when you'replaying these things is you know makeyour selection and notice how the loopPoint stays up here if I hit the letterP that Loop point will follow over tothat selection if I make another onethen it follows over to that one andagain just you know for referencethere's some quick ways to zoom aroundif you hold shift and hit e it's goingto zoom to that part if you hold alt andZ it's going to zoom out you can makeanother selection it's shift e Zooms inon that pick another part shift e andALT Z and you're back out againall right it's gonna wrap it up fortoday if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatbefore you go there's links to all thecontent on this channel ever growingfree to use it's in the link right belowthis video just click on it add it toyour favorites that will add so muchvalue to what you're trying to do andremember you don't have to learn it allin a day you know it's there so that youcan reference it when you need it comeback to it six months from now it'sthere to help you and it's there to helpme so what did we do today we learned afew extra shortcuts you know the controlD to duplicate things the control K whenyou want to repeat different notesquickly and then the control shift toset and edit velocities and then once wegot into the editor we did shift e tokind of zoom into the events and ALT Zto zoom back out a little p to hit thelocator so a lot of great littleshortcuts and you know you want to takeadvantage of those shortcuts becausethey again they speed up your workflowand keep you from having to zoom throughmenus and all that kind of stuffall right as always great to have youguys here I'll see you in the next video
