today we talk about

Common MIDI Editor Functions V2 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our second video as we continue todiscuss the common midi editor functionsin Cubase but before we start I want toremind you that there's a link below tothe free content navigation guide whichis an easy to navigate webpage withlinks to all the content on this channeland besides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wave lab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the second videoof these midi functions and editorfeatures and the previous video is inthe navigation guide in the link belowso let's look at some of the othercommon midi editing features here all ofthese kind of depend on first selectinga part in the project window and thendouble clicking it bringing it up intothe key editor so then you have yourmidi part in here to work on some ofthese are probably very familiar to mostCubase users for example if I rightclick I can pick this little X which isthe mute tool and then I can just dragover any notes I want to mute outand then those notes won't play if youmute some notes out using this mute tooland you want to hear what the othernotes would sound like you can just dragwith the mute tool againand it will toggle whatever you had muteit will become unmuted and vice versaif you're just using your select tooland you make like a selection of acouple of midi notes but then you holdCtrl and make a selection of a few othermidi notes it'll select the new one andunselect the other onesyou can right click and select thisthing called The Erase tool which allowsyou to just click over any notes anderase them or drag over them and erasethem and you can do that with multiplenotes if you drag over multiple notesand then click on any one of them it'llerase all those notes if you're lookingfor a little more sophisticated way todelete notes if you go up to your midimenu and you come down to where it saysfunctions and then you have this Submenu and if you go to the one that saysdelete notes about Midway down you getthis delete note dialog and it consistsof two separate areas you have the firstone up here for the length of the noteswhich you can click and unclick we havean area down here for velocity which youcan click and unclick and you have anarea down here that kind of depends onwhat you have clicked and unclicked butlet me give you a couple of examples ofwhat happens with this now if you make aselection of notes let me close out ofthis again for a minute if I make aselection of notes like this when I openthat dialog it's only going to affectthose selected notes on the other handif I just leave them all unselected likethis it's going to affect all thesenotes our first option here if I checkit it shows the ticks so let's do thatI'm going to check I'm going to click onthis and I'm going to pick 119. I'mgoing to check the velocity temporarilyand now if I hit delete notes anythingthat was at 119 or below it just deletedthose notes Ctrl Z out of that if Idon't want to put in the actual numberof ticks I got a little slider bar hereso I can kind of drag it along this isgood when you're trying to pick outreally larger notes values actually if Iuncheck that and I go down to theminimum velocity let me uncheck this fora minute as I look at these velocitiesif I hold my pencil tool over it I cankind of see what the velocity is here itshows at about 91 and if I go up here at107 the velocity has already ended so ifI said anything below 103 velocity itwould wipe all these velocities outlet's do that real quick I'll hit theminimum velocity 107 hit delete notesand left a few of them but it deletedquite a few as wellso this last option when we move underif you have both of these checked likethis with various criteria that you wantto pass then you can go to this lastcheck box and say I want it to be eitherone of them or it has to be both so youcan kind of pick those kind of optionsthen we have this tool called the trimtool if you bring up your little toolbarright click and go to this thing lookslike a blade click on that this justkind of cuts wherever you need it to cutif I go up to this note and I clickanywhere I want it's going to make aslice I can go on the grid or Off theGrid it really doesn't matter if Ichange the quantize to a quarter note Ican still make small little cutswhenever you cut a note with this trimtool you're always going to cut the endoff unless you go to cut and you holdthe ALT keythen it will cut the beginning off ifyou hold it above and drag it overseveral notes you get this like verticalline that kind of you can drag itwhichever way you want at an anglestraight up and down however you wantthen let go and it makes a slice in thatdirection same thing if I take it anddrag it a different way but then holdthe ALT key it'll cut off the front ofthe notes if you need this thing to bestraight up and down hold your controlkey when you drag it and you'll get avertical line going straight up and downthat you can't move from side to sideand same rules apply if I hold Ctrl anddrag it down a straight line but then atthe last minute hit my ALT keyit'll slice off the front of those notesdirectly up and down so when you'reediting midi notes you have a lot ofoptions in terms of what happens on theinfo line way more than what just seemsobvious let me try to demonstrate thisthe best I canfor example if I take a single noteand I select it and I go up on the infoline there's an option here that saysthe length it can basically just hold mymouse wheel over at the length and I canspin it and you can see I can change thelength of that note if I come down and Iselect both notes or two notes in thiscase go up to the same thing and startto spin itthey will both change and they will stayrelative to each other in other wordsone note is longer than the other itwill always stay longer even if I expandthem or make it smaller where it getsinteresting is that the minute you holdyour control key and this happens on theother moves I'm going to show you in asecond it immediately takes whateveryou've got selected and changes them toidentical so now these notes are boththe same size no matter what and as Ispin my mouse wheel they move exactlythe same amount let me show you anotherexample same kind of thing like let'ssay I take all three of these notes thatare some of them are on differentpitches and I go up to the pitch area onthe info line and I change the mousewheel and I start spinning it see allthree of these notes will go up and downrelative to each other but if I hold thecontrol keythey immediately lock onto the samepitch and then will move exactly thesame togetherthis applies to the velocity below aswell right now these velocities are atdifferent values if I go up to thevelocity area on the info line I startspinning it down they're going to startgoing down by the same amount or up bythe same amount but the minute I holdthe control key and do the same thingthey immediately go to the same valueand then we'll go up or down and thisworks no matter whether you're using onetwo notes or all the notes for examplelet's say I can hit control all hitevery note and then I go up to thelength and the same thing I startspinning it and changing the lengththey're changing the length all relativeat this moment but if I want them allthe same and I hold control now theyimmediately change to the same size andwill change by the same value everysingle node in my part and then here's areal gem again for those that havekeyboards or some kind of midi hooked upto their system if I select these notesgo up to the pitch and select it doubleclick on it I can now just hit keys onmy keyboard and every time I hit a keyon my keyboard it changes those midinotes relative to each otherif I don't want to change them relativeto each otherand I want him to all move the same holdCtrl on my keyboard and then hit him andnow all those notes change exactly thesame wayand this applies to velocities samething if I go to the velocity section Igo up on the info line I double click onthe velocity area now as I play keys onmy keyboard you can see the velocitiesare changing depending on whether I hitthe key hard or soft it changes thevelocities for every single noteand same thing if I want to hold Ctrlnow the velocities are all going to moveat the same exact value just an amazingamount of features on this area andthat'll wrap it up for today if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide besure to grab that before you go from thelink right below this video that wascreated for your benefit to help youfind what you need when you need itwhile the subjects are in order andcategorized and it's basically a tableof contents to get you to subjects whenyou have questionsso we continue on with all these midiediting features there is just a wealthof great stuff if you know where to lookand how to do thisthere's just so many times you'll seesomebody else doing something and you'relike how did they know that I've beenusing this program for 10 years and Idon't know how to do that so we're goingto solve that problem you'll know whatto do when you want to do something asalways it's great to have you guys heresee you on the next video
