Batch Processor Watch Folders in Wavelab Pro
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we're goingto have a look at watch folders in thebatch processor and wavelab pro butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged it's really anything updated andonce you have it you will always havethe latest information constantlyupdated so if you haven't gotten italready go to the link below click on itand save it to your favorites it's mygift to you and it's absolutely freeOkay so let's get started so we've beenlooking at the badge processor for a fewvideos now and today we're going tostart looking at what's called watchfolders in my opinion this is oneamazing option to really utilize some ofthe power of this batch processor againwavelab you know is so many programspacked into one program of course it's agreat mastering program you can createpodcasts on the program it has its ownextensive wave editor and the audiomontage and we've been exploring thisoption of the batch processor whichbasically allows you to take numerousfiles maybe sometimes a large amount offiles and then run a bunch of processeson those files without having to do allthe manual repetition and now we take itup one step further where we create afolder called a watch folder thatbasically just sits in the backgroundyou don't necessarily have to even openwavelab up and once you've set up yourlist of processes that you want to runyou can just literally drag files intothis folder and everything will beprocessed for you automatically it'sreally hard for me to express howamazing this really is but I'm going totry to demonstrate it for you andhopefully send you off the path of doingyour own creative experiments so tobegin this all the first thing you'regoing to want to do is actually create abatch process of some kind and for myexample I'm going to share with you whatI kind of created in one of the lastvideos and that's a process that allowsme to basically take a list of songs allof which are maybe at three or fourminutes in length various Originals orreference songs or any number of thingsthat I haveand then without touching them justputting them in the batch processor thebatch processor is going to level themall to negative 14 for me it's going totrim off the song so that they start 30seconds into the song and then it'sgoing to trim them again and give meonly little 10 second previews of eachone which allows me then to just openthem up and listen to them as a list ofvery quick previews all level normalizedto negative 14 and all at the samelength of course you could run any kindof process you want that's available inthe system but this gives you a goodexample of what's going on so the firstthing we have to do is create that kindof a batch process so let me show youhow I set mine up now I went into realdetail of this in the last video so ifyou want to see that go back and watchthat but I'm going to go through itstill here and give you a rough exampleso you can see how things break down soright now I have a batch process windowopen and over on the left I have firstup my loudness normalizer and all ofthese processes are brought in byhitting this little plus button and thendragging them in from the screen here sothey're all listed in the screen areahere but I located this loudnessnormalizer brought that in up into theloudness area I set the loudness toachieve at negative 14 you can spin itto anything you want and then I leftpretty much all the other defaults hereevery sample plug-in is here everythingis being resampled to 44.1 there's abrick wall limiter in place soeverything is Brick walled at negativeOne DB there's a dither here with thebasic the other preset that opens whenthe plugin opens then I brought thetrimmer in which again is anotherplug-in in that list on the head settingI set it at 30 000 milliseconds whichwhich equates to this thing starting 30seconds into the song So it cuts out theintro and get in right into the firstpart of the song that's followed by theresizer which is set at 10 000milliseconds so it's going to give me 10seconds of every song that's on thislist if you're just a short preview andthen it has the audio analyzer but thisisn't going to open up this only opensup if I run this live in real time intothe batch processor in this watch folderoption because things are done in thebackground this won't open up nowanother thing I have found real helpfulwhen building these things is to go downinto the comments section and basebasically type in some of the basics sothat I remember this in the future if Ihave to use this for example on thesecomments I said this batch processcontains the loudness of negative 14compression is negative 12. the trimmeris set 30 seconds and the resizer is setto 10 seconds I also put a list here ofwhat subfolder I'm getting this set intoand over here in your output is whereyou can set your output of where youwant these things to go I'm choosingthis option of going to the subfolder ofthe source path which you have all kindsof options you can pick here and we'vediscussed all of these in previousvideos as well now with all that set upI have to save this because we're goingto actually use this batch process tocreate our watch folder so On To TheNext Step and the next step is we got togo up to the tab on top that says watchfolders if you don't see that you got tolook in your tool Windows do you seewatch folders and when you click on thatyou will have this tab now the firstthing we're going to want to do iscreate a new watch folder we go up toour functions and we say add a watchfolder task at this point we want tofind the folder that we're going todesignate all this stuff to happen in sowhat you want to do is create a folderon your your hard drive somewhere thatyou know where it's at you can decidewhat kind of files you want to go inthere I just leave this as all audiofiles but here's why you have to createa preset because on your bottom optionhere it says the batch processor fileand when you click on that it's going togive you a list of your saved wavelabbadge processor files including maybethe one that you have open at the momentlike I do here I'm going to pick thatone and say okay so now I've got mywatch folder list I have this new folderthat's been created containing thisbatch processor file that I just createddown here all the stuff to do at thispoint is basically just start thisfolder now before I do that I want tocall your attention to something if wego down into the system tray area on mycomputer and I click on this I have abunch of options that are running in thebackground but nothing has anything todo with wavelab at the moment on theother hand when I come up here andactually start this watch folder andthere's a start button right here I justhit that you're given a couple ofoptions you can start it right now inthis session you can start it as abackground application which basicallyjust means it opens up another optionand just leaves it in the background oryou can set it up to open up the nexttime your computer starts all of theseare good options and all these arevaluable at different times for ourexperiment I'm just going to say startedin this wavelab Pro session and I hitactivate at this point this particularwavelab kind of Grays out and I can nolonger really do anything to edit it allthe processes become grayed out and thebatch processor window kind of freezesand that's it you can't really doanything now this is basically justrunning in the background if I come downto my system tray and I hit the up arrowand I now have a new little icon on hereand that's the wavelab batch processoricon if I right click on that I'm givinga whole bunch of great options but thefirst one is to explore the watchfolders so it immediately gives me aquick shortcut to the watch folder Ijust created an option to start wavelabPro and an option to pause it or stopthe process but the thing I want to doright now is hit this explore the watchfolder and open up my folder and thisfolder opens up as an empty folder rightnow it has this little readme file inthere if you click on it you get somevarious things of what it's going to dobut at this point that's not reallyimportant but the important thing isthat it's just empty and it's waitingfor me to put some files in here andwhen I do this it's going to take overand run all these processes that I'veset up whether it's on one file or 50files or whatever I put in here andthat's the magic of this whole thinglet's go ahead and put some songs inhere I'm going to open up another folderon my computer that has a bunch of songson it just for example sake I'm going totake maybe five of these songs I'llclick over and drag these songs in andthen I can take them and drag them rightover to my watch folder and drop them inhere they're copied into place and abunch of stuff happens in the backgroundthere's a bunch of temp folders thatstart getting written an output foldergets written a source folder getswritten so a whole bunch of things arehappening on the background here withoutme doing anything else to this when it'sdone down here on the right it sayswavelab has already finished sixprocessed files so it's given me allkinds of information when it's finishedit now has two folders in here an outputfolder and a sources folder the sourcesfolder if I click on it has all thefiles that I just drag in here in theiroriginal state the output folder on theother hand has now the same files butall processed and it's worth mentioningbefore I go further the existing file iswhere I drag these in from have not beentouched they're still in their unalteredstate I don't have to worry aboutmessing those files up even though Idrag them in they're still here allprotected but now I go to these newfiles I can just select them all I wantto preview them all and before I do thisthe result we're looking for here is allof these files should now have beennormalized to negative 14. they're allgoing to start about 30 seconds into thefile so they're not going to do anyintroductions on these files and they'reall going to play just short little 10second Clips so I can audition them byjust letting them go so let's do thatI'm going to open this up now by openingit in the default player on my computerand that opens up and now it isbeginning to play each one of thosesongs in little 10 second increments andjust like that without me doing anythingelse I have a quick audition playlist ofsix different songs that I put in hereall level matched to negative 14. only10 seconds worth of material again thepotential for things like this and whatyou can do and the amount of time it cansave you it just goes Beyond explanationso take that information have a go at itand bring yourself into a new level ofbeing able to analyze and utilize yourfiles in ways you probably have nevertried before all right gonna wrap it upfor today as always if I'm grab yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatfrom the link below this video gives youquick and easy access to all the contenton this channel ever growing and free touse content is in order categorized andconstantly being updated make it yourfirst stop when you're trying to figuresomething out with Cubase or wavelab orany of the other programs we talk aboutand probably most of the time it'll beyour last stop so we got into the watchfolders what a feature that is we talkedabout how you need to make a batch andsave it we reviewed the plug-in chainthat we were using we got into openingthe watch folder tab the functions andadd the watch folder we picked ourdestination our desired formats we sawhow things showed up in the system trayand the various start options for thewatch folders and then we tested it withsome sample files just to get a feel forthe whole thing take that informationand go have some fun with it that is anextremely valuable set of options andone thing's for sure it should now be awhole lot easier to understand as wecontinue to try to do that with all thesubjects on this stuff as always it'sgreat to have you guys here and I'll seeyou on the next video
