Backing Up Montage Audio in Wavelab Pro
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's talkabout duplicating our montages whilerecreating audio files in wavelab Probut before we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wave lab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime 10 videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so there is a set of optionswhen it comes to duplicating the audiomontage and wavelab and it all comesdown to how it handles the files behindthe clips and a little bit of how itactually changes the clip sometimes buthaving a good understanding of whatthese options really do will give you alot more confidence in what you can dowith your audio Montage when it comestime to back it up or making extracopies that you want to experiment on ormake edits so let's dig in and exploresome of these if I have a montage openand I hold Ctrl hit the letter N I'mtaken to the option in the file menuwhere I can create new files ofdifferent kinds of things for example Ican create new audio files or differentmontages batch processes today I want tofocus on this tab that says the audioMontage which then has the custom orfrom current file or templates and Iwant to look at this one from currentfile which means right away from currentfile you have to have a montage open touse this then we're going to look at theone that says duplicate recreate audiofiles we're going to specifically focuson this one click that and I hit createI'm taken to a dialog screen that givesme six different options there's otherthings besides our six options to checkhere if you want but we're going tofocus on these six first options in thislist and the very first one says theexact audio file duplicates many timeswhen I'm creating an audio Montage Iwill be dragging in files from manydifferent locations sometimes I'm justexperimenting in the Montage it's not aspecific project I'm just running filesand I'm testing things out but at theend of it all I want to kind of gatherit all into one place so I know whereeverything is and this turns out to be areally good option for that the firstthing when you do this you want to makesure you name everything give your filea good name and then give it a locationfor your folder and then I'm going tohit OK then wavelab goes ahead andcreates a brand new montage and makes acopy of any file I have and brings thatinto the Montage as well no matterwhether they were originally located ifI go back and I right click on this taband I say reveal it in the file explorerI can now see that a new folder has beencreated it has my new Montage in it andit has any audio files that are part ofthis Montage everything is now neatlyorganized and put together and I cansave this folder or move it or dowhatever I want to do with it this is agreat way to bring everything togetherthat you've been working on what youhave to be aware of though is thisdoesn't exactly create everythingduplicated and that's why some peoplewill bring it into question in terms ofa mastering application for exampleanything that's a compressed file likean MP3 that's going to be converted intoa WAV file when it creates these newfolders so in those cases you want to beaware of that and decide if this is theright option for you for my useseverything I do in wavelab isn't alwaysgeared towards mastering and many timeswhen it is towards mastering that may bejust experimentation and maybe acontinuation of the creative process anynumber of things going on the files arenot always already in their originallocations where they should be thingsare coming from all different kinds ofdirectionsI may be importing things right fromCubase and because of the way I work andall the different creative applicationsof what I'm doing things can be all overthe place and then I have an option likethis where I can bring everythingtogether and it works out very well theother thing to keep in mind is you cancheck the option on creating thisMontage that also backs up your mastersection plugins if you have anyeverything is put into one folder nowand organized now the next option sayscombine audio files into as few audiofiles as possible let me move this for aminute what's going to happen at thispoint in this Montage I have three Clipsin the cloned Montage I am still goingto have three Clips but what it's goingto do is it's going to make each clip acombination of these three Clips alltogether let me do it so you can seewhat happens I'm going to give the filesa different name and I'm going to givethe folders a different name now I'mgoing to check this option combine theaudio files into as few audio files aspossible hit OK and now you can see Ihave three Clips in the exact samelocations that they were but now eachclip in the new montage is a combinationof the three previous clips from theother montage and then just forinformation if I open this up in thefile explorer again we have created anew folder we have a new Montage in itand we have the one file that all threeof these clips are referring to alsoworth noting is that each clip was giventhe name of the Montage another thingyou want to consider about theseduplicating Montage options is that theyoffer you a great way to make anothercopy in case you want to experiment onyour Montage change things around cutthings up but you don't want to worryabout changing something that youalready have but becoming familiar andcomfortable with quickly making theseduplicates you can create various kindsof montages run your experiments andknow that your original Montage isn'tbeing changed in any way now in thatlast example of combining the audiofiles into as few files as possible allthree of these clips were referring toone audio file what happens if we changeit to all three of these clips arereferring to their own audio files if Itake these three Clips which I have nowbounced into their own own audio fileslet me open it up in the file exploreragain we have a montage like we didbefore now we can see we have threeseparate audio files where before we hitonly one audio file and the clips werereferring to the one audio file if Iclose this down and then I go to thatoption of combining the audio files intoas few audio files as possible and I hitOK again I get that kind of combinationof the three different clips but when Iopen this tab up now and reveal it inthe Explorer wavelab has now combinedall three of those files into one audiofile and that's the difference all rightnow to understand this next bit ofoptions you have to come to terms andclearly understand what's being referredto as the unused range let me give youan example so you have something to goon with that term if I take this clipand let's say I make a selection of thisend partand then I make a copy and bring it overI now have this clip with this much ofthe range but if I expand this clipI still have the rest of the clip frombefore that I copied it from and this iswhat's referred to as that unused rangeso even though it's showing just thispart of the clip it has all this otherinformation that's left to it so as wego through these next options whichtalks about removing this unused rangeit's referring to removing this unseenpart of the clip now to understand thisexample that I'm going to show you I'mgoing to make some various selectionshere and make copies of them and thenI'll make one more down here of this onenow originally this was three Clipsreferring to three different files andeven though I've made copies of variousClips with different sections like thisit's still referring to three differentfiles nothing's really changed in thatarea let me show you the option we'regoing to look at here if we go down ourlist we have one that says remove unusedranges now let me show you the detailsof what this is really sayingthis clip right here and this clip hereare identical the only difference isthat this one is hiding some of thatunused range same thing with this onehere the smaller one is hiding some ofthe unused range and the same thing withthe last one down here now if I keepthis original clip that has the fullrange and this clip that has the smallerrange but let's say on this one here Ikeep only the smaller part but I removethis larger clip that has the full rangeI'm going to delete it I'm gonna do thesame thing with this one down here I'mgoing to keep the small piece that I'vedragged out but I'm going to remove thefull range here now I'm going to performthe duplicate Montage optionI'm going to choose the option that saysremove the unused ranges and what thisdoes is it creates another Montage withthe same amount of clips that the otherone had in other words this originalMontage has four clips and this newclone Montage also has four Clips butwhat's happened is this particular clipwhich refers to this clip that has thelonger range still has all thatinformation and can be changed to lookjust like the original clip it came frombut these new clips that were made downhere because the only thing they have isthe section that was taken it's removedall the extra information and the samething with this one because this onlyrefers to this small clip now this onealso cannot be expanded any furtherthis option of remove the unused rangeswill never increase the amount of filesno matter how many ranges you make itwill always keep the same amount offiles that it starts with on the otherhand if we go to the next option thatsays split the files to remove theunused ranges and let's say we dosomething like this I'm going to make asection here maybe make a section heredo the same thing for each one of thesenow if I duplicate this Montage withthat option it will still just havethree files because again we have thisone range that encompasses these othertwo smaller ones on the other hand if Iremove these initial bigger rangesthen I duplicate this Montage with thisoption that says split files to removethe unused ranges I say okay again itmakes a montage with the same amount ofClips but this time instead of threefiles it's now expanded at up to sixfiles to accommodate the same amount ofClips so in other words I had to createa file for each extra clip that gotadded into this montage and it removedthe unused ranges and then if we go tothe next option that says create onefile per clip and I do something like Idid before take some ranges out of therangesin this example it doesn't matter if wehave these smaller pieces that are partof the larger range every single clip isgoing to be reassigned its own separatefile so we have nine Clips here we'regoing to end up with nine files let'stry it I go to the option that sayscreate one file per clip say okay myMontage looks the same if I check thefiles I now have the Montage and I havenine separate audio files one per clipand each one gets named with an extranumber to identify it and then the lastone we're going to look at says createone file per clip but avoid duplicatesit's kind of like what we've been doingrange is coming out of a different rangebut in the case where maybe you have theexact same range like I'm going to takethis piece here and then I'm going totake this piece out again so it'sexactly the samewhere normally with the other option itwould create a unique file for every oneof these totaling 10 different files aswe see here because the idea of thismontage is to avoid duplicates when Imake this montage and I make the optionthat says avoid the duplicates and sayokay again the Montage is exactly thesame but instead of 10 audio files beingcreated because there's 10 Clips there'sonly nine audio files because the onethat's identical is sharing the sameaudio file and that's how it avoidsmaking duplicates so there you go alittle breakdown of all the differentMontage duplicates when you're usingextra audio files or creating the audiofiles examine those learn about them andyou can decide which ones work for youall right it's gonna wrap it up fortoday as always if you haven't grabbedyour navigation guide be sure to grabthat from the link below this videogives you a quick easy access to all thecontent on this channel ever growing andfree to use content is in ordercategorized and being updated all thetime do yourself a favor download it useit and become part of the club so thatshould give you some idea of whathappens with the duplicating Montageoptions of course there's other onesbesides the ones we talked about but Iwanted to focus mostly on theduplicating of the audio if you go awaywith the concept that most of the timethe clips are the same when youduplicate a montage for the most partbut it's all about how the files arehandled whether they're combined orseparate files are made if you get thatconcept you'll pretty much understandwhat's going on it's one of those thingsthat may not be quite so obvious whenyou first look at it but as you thinkabout it it all becomes pretty clear andwe continue down the road to learningabout all the different features asalways it's great to have you guys hereI'll see you on the next video
