Automation V3 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our third video as we continuediscussing Automation in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we move on to our thirdvideo of the subject of Automation andCubase the previous videos are in thenavigation guide in the link below butnow we're going to move on to talkingabout some of these options in theautomation panel first we're going tolook at these ones Under The Heading ofPhil and the first one we have here isto punch I'm going to activate that andwhat happens when we activate this oneI'm going to look at this four bar loopI have here is the automation playsprobably starts somewhere in the secondbar here is I start drawing the faderdown I could go up or down but I'm goingto draw it down in this example once Idraw it down to the bottom which is whatI'm going to do it's going to draw astraight line back to where I startedpunching in from the beginning watch asI do this nowI'm gonna let it plate now I'm going topunch it in I'm going to draw it downand then I'm going to release it and asyou can see it drew a straight line theidea here is it looks at where I punchedin meaning the place where I originallytouched the fader and it looks at whereI ended up and whatever the automationwas at where I ended up it draws thesame thing back to where I started thisis a good option when you're trying toset an initial level because it won'tput a bunch of extra points in heretrying to get from point A to point Bnotice also that whatever I acted inthis case the option to punch once Ifinished it turned itself off and thatpunch turned off then the next optionsays to start and you can kind of figurethat this is going to do the same thingwe just did but instead of drawing itback to the punch in point it's going todraw it all the way back to thebeginning of the project let's try itnow I'm going to start drawing it downI'm going to release it and now thatautomation at zero is going all the wayback to the beginning of the project thenext option says to the end I'm going toshrink this project down a little bityou can imagine what's going to happenit's going to draw it to the end let'sdo it[Music]I'm starting to draw it downI'm going to go halfway I'm going to letgo and if I zoom out I can see thatautomation continues on to the end of myproject the next option we have heresays in the loop you can see I have leftand right locators up here I'm going tostart the project playingI'm going to draw it down to the bottomlet goand it draws that automation throughoutthe loop if you have no automation afterthe loop point it will just continue todraw it all the way to the end of theproject the next option gaps reallyapplies to the Virgin Territory optionlet's go to our settings turn on VirginTerritory which means we have no initialvalue any longer and if I write someautomation at that pointall rightit only rates in the area where I'vetouched it but if I come up and turn thegaps option on and do the same thingand what it does is you can see where Ipunched in it filled in the Gap fromanything previously before that so wesaid every time you hit one of thesebuttons basically punches in and punchesout automatically but if you hit thebutton a second time you'll see a littlelock up here and then that process willstay intact until you disable it thesesame fill options can be used just todraw them in manually if I go to my drawtool and let's say I put on the one toend and I start drawing some automationthe minute I let go it's going tocontinue the curve all the way to theend of the project you can do that withany of these say I go to start make somedrawings let go so you can experimentwith all these various options and thedraw tool at the same time so the nextcolumn we have says suspend the readwe've talked about this a little bit youcan set all to suspend all the differentread options at once but a typicalexample of this let's say you havevolume Automation in your track youcould have a number of differentautomations but all you have to do is goup and hit volume to suspend it at thatpoint you can write new automation foryour volume and you won't be affected bythe previous other automation you havethe same option to suspend variousthings when you're writing automationyou can hit any one of these particularthings or set them all at the same timeif you want examples of where you wouldwant to suspend certain kinds of writefunctions let's say you have severaltracks enabled in the right state butthen you start muting and soloingvarious tracks your automation is goingto pick up the writing of those mutingtracks the next thing you know you'vegot five tracks muted out when you weretrying to just solo one track come toyour suspend right and you click on themute option that will exclude that partof the writing operation so even thoughyou solo tracks and then continuechanging things like the volume orwhatever you won't have to worry aboutwriting a bunch of mute automation ontoyour other tracks and then the lastcolumn allows you to see automation onall your tracks very quickly column saysshow and for example if I hit volumeit's going to bring down every volumeautomation lien on every track or EQ orthe Pan shows these Lanes whetherthere's automation or not you can checkthe little box that says used only andthen it will only show if things areused and at the bottom you have a hideall in case you want to get rid of yourautomation very quickly as well againyou have these options on the tracks ifyou right click them there's enoughoptions that say show used automationfor selected tracks or for allautomation this makes it very quick easyvisual way to do it and then moving overto the settings tab we've looked at mostof these there's also this option thatsays show the data on the tracks weenact that the midi data shows up behindthe automation data you have the optionthat says continue writing on transportjump this is great when you're using thearranger track or the cycle mode if Ihave this turned on and I start writingin automationeven when it recycles back around itcontinues writing my automationon the other hand if I uncheck this andI start writing automationwhen it comes around or recycles itdisengages the writing of the automationprobably my favorite setting is the onethat says reveal the parameter on theright I always leave this one checkedwhen that option is activated anytime Ichange something that automation Laneautomatically shows up we talked aboutthe return time the reduction level cango from zero to 100 percent at zeroyou're going to have lots of littlepoints and the closer you get to 100percent you'll have fewer points thedefault is 50 and that works pretty goodthe spike detection range is measured inmilliseconds can go anywhere from zeroto 200 milliseconds if you find yourselfwith huge spikes happening where thingsare happening too quickly you canincrease this number and that willprevent any kind of spikes happening andthen the last option you have on thefreeze trim if you want the trim to beaffected automatically or manually youcan choose those options as well andthat completes our discussion ofautomation as always be sure to grabyour navigation guide from the linkbelow this video gives you quick easyaccess to all the content on the channelever growing free to use content is inorder being updated continually and nownow with the addition to playlists youcan binge out like crazy on the subjectof your choice so today we finished outour discussion of the automation wetalked about the one shot versus TheContinuous we saw how we can draw in ourfill options we looked at the suspendoptions and the show options and then wefinished out with some of the settingsthat we haven't touched on yet as wework our way through all the varioussubjects in Cubase and we will keepmoving forward and pick this up nexttime as always great to have you guyshere and I'll see you on the next video
