Automation V2 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our second video as we continuediscussing Automation in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos are orchange really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we move on to our secondvideo on the subject of automation avery important subject when it comes tomusic production how skilled you are atusing automation will have a huge impacton how well your Productions sound andif you're not comfortable with yourautomation you'll be constantlystruggling wondering how to operate itin our last video we started gettinginto the different modes we learnedabout the touch the latch and thecrossover if you have confusion or notsure about any of that be sure to goback and watch that video it's in thenavigation guide in the link below butnow let's go a little step deeper ontothis and we have a term when we'redescribing Automation in Cubase where itsays the initial value or the use ofVirgin Territory when we have things setto What's called the initial valueanytime you see an automation lienyou're going to see a line going rightdown the middle of it or it's some valueand that's the initial value and if youstart drawing automation on thateverything moves from that point on theother hand if we go up to our automationpanel hit the e up here and we move overto settings we have another option herethat says use the Virgin Territory andif we check that then that line down themiddle or wherever it is disappears whenyou have an initial value that meansthings are going to be snapping back tothat initial value and there's going tobe Automation in between your differentevents when you use the Virgin Territorythere's nothing to snap to becauseeverything is wherever you starteverything is wherever you end there'spros and cons to either approach thething you need to know is that there's adifference and no one to turn it on oroff depending on what you're trying toachieve Let's do an example with theinitial I'm going to turn that off I'mgoing to enact the right button I'mgoing to start playing and move thevolume faderand now you can see the result that wehave if I go back up to my panel go tosettings use Virgin Territory let's dothe same thingnow you can see the result that we havewith that when you're using the initialvalue if you set up some automationlet's go ahead and write something backin here again foreignyou will have this long piece ofautomation even when you haven't writtenanything and there's no way to select itand delete it if you try to grab theautomation by selecting it or draggingover nothing happens or if you take therange tool and you try to draw over itand hit delete or backspace nothing willhappen if you go back up to yourautomation panel take something that youhave set as initial value then take theoption to use the Virgin Territory youcan now do what's called creating gapsso if I take my range tool for example Ican actually drag over automation thenhit backspace and I can erase that if Iwant at any point before or after anyother automation that I've made andallows me to remove automation I may notwant in place also sometimes you havethese long bits of automation just runon to the end of your project you canactually create a Terminator point thatends your automation if I just click andput a point where I want things to endthere's an option up on the info barthat says Terminator and I can click onthat and change it from no to yes andonce I do that all the automation fromthat that point on will end all right solet's start talking about thisautomation panel this is basically yourone stop for everything Automation inone way or another it just has so muchstuff in it first of all to open it upif you haven't changed your shortcutkeys you can hit the F6 on your keyboardyou can also go up to project come downthere's an option that says automationpanel and we've also sit on the toolbaritself if you hit the little e on theautomation mode that'll also open it upbut the first thing to learn about thisor to have you to talk about we havethese two tabs we have an operations Taband we have a settings tab and belowthat we have these read write buttonstypically you have the same thing up inyour project itself if you hit the readbutton to turn it off turns off all theread Automation in your project samewith the right but a great option thatyou may not be aware of this little athis gives you the option to suspend allthe read and write automation at thesame time if you turn that on over onthe tracks the read and write buttonskind of gray out you can see all thesebuttons light up under the suspend rightin the suspend read so while thathappens all your automation is basicallyjust turned off you can just hit thatbutton again all right so then thatbrings us on to these buttons here onesays touch one says the auto latch thecrossover and trim these are thingswe've talked about in the previousvideos if you want to see thosedemonstrated go back and watch that thenthis brings us to this drop down listwhich gives us a whole bunch of greatoptions the very first one is delete allthe Automation in the project so if youget a project where you've been workingon automation but you just don't thinkit's going anywhere and you just don'twant to sit there and pick out one pieceat a time you can delete everything withone shot you have the option to deleteall the automation of selected trackswhich of course is something you have ona track in general there's that optionbut it's nice to have it all in thisdrop down list you have the option todelete the Automation in the range whichis what we talked about already with theVirgin Territory then you have thisoption to fill gaps on selected tracksany gaps that I have are filled in withwhatever automation was kind ofpreviously before it and then these lasttwo freeze all the trim automation inthe project and on the selected trackswe'll do an example of that coming up sothen before we go into all the specificsof these buttons which are basicallyjust filters one says fill and then allthese buttons below it apply to thatthen it says suspend the read and all ofthese buttons apply to that suspend theright these buttons apply to that andthen finally show and these buttonsapply to that we'll do some examples ofthese coming up but the first thingyou'll notice is you have a button atthe bottom that says set all and if Ihit that it selects everything in thatlist as a column same thing on the rightoption if I hit select all all of theseoptions can be selected or I can hitthem one at a time and pick specificones and then we'll look at these onesin the show column coming up all rightso next up looking at this trim optionagain and as we said the trim is kind oflike an overview of all the automationas you can see I have this automationcurve and if I hit the trim button itkind of allows me to take all of thatAutomation and kind of scale it down orat other points scale it up in many waysit's a general curve over the automationcurve again if I turn the trim off afterI've used it kind of shows me two curvesshows me my original automation curveand then it kind of shows me a backdropof what the trim is doing to that curveif at any point I want to kind of freezethat so that it's not going to be editedany further and the drop down I have anoption to freeze all the trim in theproject or freeze the trim of theselected track I'm going to go ahead anddo it on the selected track that becomesthe new automation curve and there's nolike dual curve in the picture anymoreof course I could always re-trim thateven if I wanted to as well though andthat's what we're going to leave thediscussion of automation for this videoas always if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatfrom the link below gives you quick easyaccess to all the content on thischannel ever growing free to use contentis in order categorized being updatedcontinually do yourself a favor click onit download it save it to your favoritesuse it today use it six months fromtoday when you have to review what youforgot today it's an excellent tool andpersonally I use it myself you reallycan't be having the ability to haveeverything in Cubase demonstrated foryou right at your fingertips whichbrings us back to today's demonstrationof automation we got into our discussiontalking about Virgin Territory versusthe initial value we talked aboutcreating gaps we defined a Terminatorpoint we began looking at the automationpanel and in the panel the operationsTab and then we ended up talking aboutthe trim and how you can freeze yourtrim we have a few more things to talkabout and demonstrate and we're going toget into those in the next video asalways it's great to have you guys hereand I'll see you next time
