today we talk about

Audio Functions in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's talkabout audio functions in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate web page with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youokay so let's go get started so whenwe're talking about audio functions inCubase we're talking about various toolsthat we have to analyze and processaudio and the first thing in that groupis the detect silence option we'relooking at it right now I'm going toclose this if we select a piece of audiowe go up to audio down to Advanced andthen to detect silence we get a screenthat first of all lets us see thedifferent pieces of audio we have andthen we can perform different taskswe're going to go through here firstthing that happens in this window iswhen you move your mouse over any of thepieces of audio it changes to a speakerwhich you can then click onand audition at any point you wantbelow that you have a preview level soyou can change the level if it's tooloud or not loud enoughyou have an option down here that saysmute the gaps you have highlighted areasand then this dark area dark area isperceived as a gap so if I audition nowstop when it reaches its perceived Gapif you want to zoom in and out you havea zoom control in the bottom right hereor you can hold control and move yourmouse wheel if you have zoomed out youcan use the scroll button at the bottomor just hold your mouse wheel over itand spin it you have open and closedthreshold buttons here if you click onthem and open them up or bring it backdownit'll determine how much of theselection is made here if you look atthese numbers below it says openthreshold close threshold and theychange as you move this you can just aseasily move into these numbers and spinthose with your mouse wheel for somereason you want to do theseindependently and not linked you canunlink them you can click one time atthe beginning to preview the whole fileoh theare we there yetI'm too tired and that lets you know ifyour gaps are set right then you havethese options down here to see theminimum time open and the minimum timeclosed you can basically just put yourmouse over these and spin it but youwill get a big difference on where thegaps are depending on whether you raisethis or lower this and it's the same forboth of them the closed and the openwill have that effect as you zoom inreal close on these you will see thateven if you bring these numbers down onthe closed on the opened all the way youstill may see areas where it doesn'tconnect right to your audio and that'swhere these next numbers that say thepre-roll and the post roll if you have apre-roll number that's going to affectwhat goes into the audio so now this oneis cutting off right at the beginning ofthe audio and if I bring this number upa little bit then there's some dead airspace before the audio same thing on thepost roll if I bring that down toabsolutely nothing it may cut off soonerthan I want it to I can increase thatnumber and that'll add more of the tailin there as you move these numbers ifthey seem to be moving quick if you holdthe shift key while you adjust them youcan get finer adjustments then we moveover to the result area here if we comedown the list it says the number ofsections in this case it's showing thatit's splitting things into threedifferent sections and you have thenumber three right here you can't changethe number three it's just a display youhave the option to change things intoregions if I leave this unchecked and Iopen up the pool window it shows thispiece of audio right here it's calledvocals new and it's all by itself so ifI go back and I actually perform thisprocess and I leave the regionsunchecked and I say process it cuts thisaudio into three different pieces if Iopen the pool back up I still only haveone piece of audio because this is stillthe same piece of audio just cut up intothree different pieces on the other handif I do the same exact thing and thistime I say add it as regions and beforeI do that you have the option to changethe region name or change a numberthat's going to be appended to the namebut if I keep it checked as regions andthen I say process I still get threepieces of audio here if I go back and Iopen the pool up along with my one pieceof audio and I'll have a plus box and itshows three different regions below itso I can now use these regions in myproject as well and then these finaloptions the first one says strip thesilence and you have to have thatchecked basically if you don't have thatchecked this whole process really doesnothing anyway on the other hand youhave the option to apply Fades this willput a fade wherever it splits the audioI've set this at 500 milliseconds if Ihit process you can now see that it'sput a fade at every place where it cutthe audio and then the only other optionhere it says analyze and next to it hasa check box for auto basically if youalways leave this check on the auto youreally don't have to press the analyzebecause it automatically does it and itautomatically updates the picture everytime you change a number but once you'vemade all your choices see where thesilences are going to be and auditionedYour Parts the only last thing to do ishit the process button and then you haveyour updated audio with the silenceactually taken out of it then next up wehave the option for a spectrum analysiswindow if we take any of these audioclips and select one and then I go up toaudio I can come down to the Spectrumanalyzer of course you can zoom in andout on the graph or View the left andright channels independently if you wantto use multiple clips you can pickanother Clip open up a second meter ifyou want allowing you to compare thembut probably one of the better optionson the meter in general is allows you togo to any point on the graph and thenright click on it that point you canmove to any other point on the graph andup here in the right you see a displayas you're doing this and there'ssomething that shows the letter D whichshows you the difference between the twopoints and then the last option to lookat today if we take any one of theseaudio clips pick up the audio if we comedown there's an option that saysstatistics and then we get this screenthat gives us a whole bunch of usefulinformation it's divided into the leftand the right channel but as you go downthe list you have the sample values theminimum maximum the peak amplitude thetrue Peak if there's any DC Offset youcan see the bit depth there's even anestimated pitch and a sample rate as youcome down you can see the average RMSthe maximum RMS and then you have acategory for the loudness you can seethe momentary loudness short termloudness integrated loudness loudnessrange and then maximum true peak levelif you want to keep any of these orprint them out you can hit copy toclipboard and paste it in there and youcan print that stuff off if you want itso all in all a nice selection ofvarious audio analysis tools all rightit's going to wrap it up for today asalways if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatfrom the link below this video it's yourfaster and better way to learn you wantto pick it up look over all the topicsthat are gathered there and then you canget started down that path to a betterway as we talked about the audiofunctions today in Cubase we looked atthe audio Advanced detect silence optionwe saw that the functions are for youranalysis we saw waveform display previewoptions the detection section and welooked at the Spectrum analyzer windowthen we finished off looking at thestatistics window a lot of great optionsto analyze and work on your audio withas always it's great to have you guyshere and I'll see you on the next video
