Audio Effects V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today we aregoing to discuss audio effects in Cubasebut before we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate web page with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere if you're working with programslike wave laab or qbase plugins or thecable gu shaper box and many manyprojects that are in the works then Iknow you're going to find just like Ihave that this is an invaluable studyAid and the other thing I want to makesure you understand is that this is nota simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youokay so let's get started so audioeffects they are your reverbs delays andall the other things that you can add toa piece of audio to change his characteror enhance the sound we're going tostart by focusing on two different waysthat you can add effects but reallythere's three different ways and thosethree different ways would be an inserteffect a send effect or if you want toput direct offline processing right onthe audio you can do that as well solet's look at an insert effect what doesthat mean we use a Reber for our firsttest so the first place to look at is inyour mixer you have a category that'ssays inserts if you click on that you'llsee every effect you have on your systemyou can type in at the top in the yoursearch I want to put in room Works whichI can open up with a little e and then Ihave an effect on the sound when you'reusing an insert the effect is right onthesound anytime you want to remove effecthit the down arrow if you don't see ithit the minus you'll see an option thatsays no effect click on that and theeffect is removed in another place youcan put an insert effect hit your editChannel and and then right there on theleft you have the option to put in aninsert effect and the same thing appliesand then going back into the projectright on the inspector itself come downthe list there's another insert optionand the same thing applies on any one ofthese inserts you can put up to 16different effects in here once you putan effect in you can drag it to any slotand you have a pre and post line downhere at the bottom which you can changeas well and you can make your effectspre or post we're going to talk moreabout that coming up you can set up youreffects as send effects as well beforeyou begin this process you want tocreate a send effect if you right clickanywhere in the mixer you have theoption to create an effects track startby putting your effect in the effectstrack set your output these othervarious options add the track thatcreates this effect track which you canhit the e on we're going to look atthese more as we go along now if I goback to this clap Channel and I go up tothe send option I now have the optionfor that room Works Reverb right thereas a send bus click on that hit a buttonto activate it then you have a slider toset the amount typically when you set upa send effect you want to go to theeffects Channel open that effect up andmake sure that mix is turned up all theway and then when you go to your channelyou can turn your slider up on theeffect same thing when you want to getrid of it click on it go to no bus ifyou hit the edit Channel button then youhave an option for sends over here onthe right same thing click your Reverbor whatever effect you have activate itand you can turn it up or down and thenback in the project same thing you havea tab that stands for sends you can pickyour send and turn your effect up anddown currently you can have up to eightdifferent sends on any channel one ofthe things to consider is we'recurrently with vst3 technology whichoffers one of the benefits of smartplug-in processing if you look at myperformance meter right now the AALguard performance is higher than therest of these and they're all kind ofmoving a little more than I would likethem to when I look at the bottom theaverage load on my system is moving andthis is with my system not even playingif I go to edit down to my preferencesand look down the list till I get to VSTand the option for plugins we have onenow that says suspend the vst3 plug-inprocessing when no audio signals arereceived and I can check that hit applyand after a little bit of recalculatingI can see all my meters start to dip alittle bit and go down by the same tokenthe total load down here at the bottomgoes down a little bit the reason forthat is that even though I have pluginson my system unless they're being usedat any particular time in the projectthey're not taking up CPU power so it'sworthwhile testing that on your systemto see if you gain any benefit from itpretty much all the vsts now offer youthe option for side chaining I'm suremost of you know what that means let meshow you a quick demonstration for thosethat don't in this particular song Ihave all the instruments playing butmaybe I want the kick to affecteverything so I'm going to group all mychannels into one group except for mykick I can go to the channel strip and Ican turn the compressor on on thechannel there's an e to open up thecompressor and then you have the optionto activate the side chain over here onthe right if I hold the alt key and hitthis again now I can pick what I wantthe side chain to be affected by in thiscase it's the kick drum I'm going topick that so what's going to happen nowbecause I have the kick routed the sidechain against the other channels as Iturn the compressor threshold up theother channels will be ducked out of theway the more you do this the moreobvious it is let me play a little bitand you'll hearit I'm sure you've heard thatbeforesome plugins because of the nature ofthe processing they do will cause adelay I have this multiband compressorup here and when I hit my key on mykeyboard you can probably hear the clickthrough the microphone but it takes asecond for the actual sound to comethrough thisunit there's a couple ways that qbasgives you to deal with this and some ofthese plugins you'll actually have abutton that says live when I turn thison now the sound is responding exactlywhen I hit the keyturn this back off there's a clickbecause I hit the key and then it soundsalso up on your toolbar and if you don'tsee this right click on the toolbar areathere's an option that says constrainthe delay compensation and this is abuilt-in feature that does the samething if you go over and find thatbutton and turn it on takes a minute tolight up but that will allow you to playin real time aswell plug in no longer causes a delayplugins that you have with delay orphase typically have the option to syncup to your tempo right now if I hit thisdelay and I turn up the frequency or thesyncamount it's just kind of random if Iturn on this button below it it sayssync now whatever Tempo I have to myproject the delay will sink toit and this includes that the temposlows down or speeds up all right solet's talk about the concept of pre andpost in our discussion is going to referof what effect the faders have basicallyif you equate post with being affectedby the fader you'll get the idea if welook over on the channel insert in theinspector area I've put a compressor inhere and there's a green line whichallows you to set pre or post for anychannel insert and you can actually grabthat green line and move it where youwant it but anything above the greenline is in the pre position anythingbelow the green line is in the postposition now let me try to show you whateffect that has you can see here theamount of reduction that the compressoris causing and if I take the fader ofthe sound and I pull it down watch whathappens to this reading on thecompressor even with the sound turnedall the way down the compressor is stillengaged and causing compression if Ibring the fader backup and that's in the preos with thiseffect if I grab this effect and pull itinto the post area watch what happens toexactly the same thing when I change thefader we have the compressor reading I'mgoing to pull the fader downas I bring the sound down the compressordecreases as well less fader lesscompression so the amount of compressionor any effect in the post position isdetermined by where the level is set onthis fader and last thing we'll talkabout today when you're looking at yourmixer in the insert section as you addeffects the mixer will kind ofreconfigure its view I take thiscompressor and pull it down a few slotsthe mixer begins to expand and everytime I move it it'll just keep expandingthis way you only have the slotsnecessary to see your effect if you wantto change that option you can go up tothe top right and there's an arrow thatstands for the rack settings if youclick that and come down there's anoption that says fixed number of slotsand if you hit that you will always havethe full amount of slots availableeither option is good depending on whatyou want all right it's going to wrap itup for today as always if you haven'talready be sure to grab your copy of thedigital audio manual content navigationguide from the link below the fasterbetter way to learn and review pick itup look it over all the different topicsthat are gathered there and then you toocan get started on your path to a betterway to learn all this stuff today webegan looking at audio effects in qbasewe talked about insert sends we saw thevsst smart plug-in options we talkedabout side chain we had a look at thedelay compensation and then we looked athow to set up a fixed number of slots inyour mixer and we'll pick it up herenext time as always it's great to haveyou guys here and I'll see you on thenextvideo
