Additional Score Techniques V1 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we're goingto talk about additional techniques fordesigning your score in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos are changereally anything updated and once youhave it you will always have the latestinformation constantly updated so if youhaven't gotten it already go to the linkbelow click on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so we've been talking about thescore for many many videos nowlooking at various elements of where toput the notes and designing the text andthe chords just many many elements andall those different lessons and videosare all in navigation guide in the linkbelow but now we're going to discuss alittle bit more what we can do with someof the layout options and that includesthings like the bar lines and reallyjust all different kinds of elementsthat we can move around when it comestime to actually print out your score ordo something like that so the firstthing we want to talk about is make surethat you always go up when you're goingto do this kind of stuff go to your filemenu come down to where it says pagesetup and just make sure everything isthe way you want it to be in this pagesetup you want a letter or do you wantyou know any of these other kind ofoptions you can pick in terms of pagelayout but you want to make sure this isset up first because anytime you startchanging the elements on the page if yougo back and change your page setup laterto print it it's going to just messeverything up for you so start by makingthat page setup is correct the way youwant it first so the first thing we'regoing to dig into is moving these barlines around a little bit and to getinto this kind of stuff we have to go upto scores and come down to the page modeI'm going to click on that and thenwe're going to talk about what happensif we want to start moving these barlines around now the first thing you cando is you can actually just grab any barline and move it if you do that all thebar lines around it are going to move aswell so if I grab this and I startdragging a little biteverything gets resized this became alarger measure and these guys over hereshrunk I could pull it down more if Iwant or I can grab it and move it in theother direction whatever you want to doyou can adjust that now if you hold yourcontrol key and do that then you havethe ability to move just one single barline and that will only change that barline and not any of the other ones youcan actually indent or change the lengthby going to the very first bar line andmove that in or go to the end and do thesame thing you can grab it move that inif you do an indent like that pull itall the way back even past the border ofthe page it will automatically just fillin the page the right way if you move toyour ALT key and hold that down thenwhen you make these little indents thenit affects all the staffs below it aswell same thing on the end if you dothat I'm holding the ALT key while I dothat and then if you go to a bar line inthe middle and hold the ALT key samething it'll line up those bars withinthe measures for anyone that you grabit'll take the steps above and below itas wellyou have the option to break these barlinesfor example notice how this bar goesfrom this staff down to this staff andit's like that on every one of these ifI move over to my Eraser tool and Iclick on one of these then it breaks anderases every one of them through therest of the staff once it gets down tothe next one it continues with the barlines back where they were if I controlsthe out of this if I on the other handhold alt when I click on this then allof the bar lines get broke from here onthrough the rest of the song except forthe very first and the very last one ifI wanted the first one then it's goneso if we have some bar lines that we'veerased or your score just doesn't havethem in general where they're connectedthen you have the opposite effect if yougo to your glue tool if you'd hold itover the first bar at the top then thatwill connect these other Bars by thesame token if you have all your barlines erased and then you go to yourglue tool and hold alt when you click onit then it will fill in all the barlines all the way through the scoreall right so here's an interestingoption that we have with what they callbraces and brackets we go up to ourscores down to our settings and we go tothe layout tab we can see we have thethree tracks listed here that are thesame up in the score but if you look atthe bar lines the bar lines run from thetop staff to the bottom on each one ofthese from the top to the bottom andsometimes you want to group thesedepending on various situations withwhat they call braces or brackets andlet me give you the example of this andthis is one of those things that's onthe screen is very tiny and very easy tooverlook first let me show you what thebraces and the brackets look like if youlook up on this screen up here you havea couple of little columns that show upbefore the track names here if you clickin the first one it will draw what'scalled a brace and then you can takethat brace and then drag it down overthe other tracksand it's easier if you click it anddon't release the mouse and then drag itso now I've drawn this brace over thesethree tracks if I come down and hitapply it draws this nice little fancybrace here at the beginning of all thesestaffs if I come up here and click itagain I can remove it if I go to thenext little column I can draw a bracketsame thing if I click at the top andkind of drag it down and then hit applyyou get this more straight line bracketnow I've got this bracket going over allthree of these staffs but if I wanted togo over let's say two of them and Ichange the size of it hit apply I nowhave this option where it shows thisbracket around these two staffs at thebottom not on this top one but as you godown the staff you can see that the barlines still go from the top to thebottom so now you have this extra optionwhich is really nice if you go back toproject tab make sure it's on notationstyle and then go over here and look forWhat's called the bar line category pickthe option that says break the bar lineswith the brackets if you come over hereand check that one and hit apply now youget a nice picture of exactly what'sgoing on in other words you have yourbracket going over these two staffs herebut then the bar lines also reflect itas you can see the bar lines over onthese two and on these two but it has awide open space on these up here it's areal nice way to clean up your staffwhen you're trying to group things andkeep it clean in other partsall right now here's one that many of ushave been wondering the answer to I knowfor sure and that's how do you set uphow many bars show up on the staff if Iclose this down for a minute I can seethat my song here has six measures ofmusic so how do I get this to displaythe way I want when I open it up in thescore the way it opened up right now isit shows four bars on the top here andthen the remaining two bars are in thebottom and maybe I don't want these twobig bars at the bottom maybe I'd ratherspace this out so I have three bars onthe top and three bars on the bottom andyou're inclined to think well maybe if Izoom in and out a certain way oranything you might try to do to fix thiswell it turns out there's another areaand let's look at that if we go up toedit and down to our preferences whichup until now we haven't even looked atthere's actually an option in thepreferences for the scores and one ofthe options in the score category isediting and at the bottom of the editingscreen lo and behold here's an optionthat says the default number of bars perstaff and right now mine is set at fourif I change it to three the way I wantit come down hit the apply button andimmediately the score updates now I havethe spacing I want I have three measuresat the top and three measures at thebottom it is perfect maybe I want thisall right up on the top so let's go backto edit to our preferences to up to sixbars for the default hit apply and now Ihave my whole song up on one area hereif I added more bars than down it wouldgo but just like that easy as can be youcan change the amount of bars that yousee here so then you have another greatoption for changing the bars we go up toour scores you have to make sure thatyou're on page mode to do this so that'salready selected for me so then wecontinue down go to Advanced layout andright here we have an option for thenumber of bars click on that then we getthis dialog which allows us to changethe bars on the active staff or all thestaffs for example right now again Ihave six bars here let's change thisdown to four bars and I'm going to sayall staffs I click on that and made fourbars on the top and only had two barsleft over so we'll put them on thebottom let's move it to three bars andthen hit all staffs everybody gets threebars let's move it to two bars hit allstaffs only two bars of Staff what agreat utilitylet's go back to six on this hit allstaffs let's do this option that saysthis step and we'll move it to four barsand this depends on where this activestaff highlight is so now I hit thisstaffand now I make sure that the activestaff has four bars whatever's left overgoes to the next step totally usefultotally customizable Perfect all rightit's going to wrap it up for today asusual if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatbefore you go it's at the link rightbelow this video gives you access to allthe content on this channel ever growingand free to use all timeso we've begun looking at theseadditional techniques for Designing thescore today we looked at the file andthe page setup we got into the greatoptions for moving the bar lines andbreaking the bar lines and gluing thebar lines we started discussing whatbraces and brackets are and how we canuse them we looked at breaking the barlines with the braces and brackets andfinally figured out how to change thenumber of bars either by default ormanually this is some great informationfor all of us that are trying to figureout the score and there's much more tocome as always it's great to have youguys here I'll see you on the next video
